Hi! This website is here to distribute and chronicle the research on working conditions of non-EU citizens in the Dutch arts & culture sector. Often perceived as single cases, migrant creatives are a large group of professionals, remaining invisible as a group due to the lack of discussion on the role of citizenship in the development of creative careers. My name is Karina Zavidova (personal website, CV), I am an independent researcher, and with my work on this subject, I hope to contribute to the discussion. My aim is to gather information on most common issues migrant creatives face in their daily lives, so I can a) understand what are these issues (and how my own experiences as a migrant worker relate to the bigger picture) and b) understand what are the skills vital for a migrant-owned creative practice. Distribution of information, supplying knowledge and possibly skills forms a so-called 'missing curriculum', a bundle of skill-and knowledge-sharing I aim to create. I am interested in the following aspects and questions which arise in the context of a migrant-owned creative practice:

I am collecting information with the following survey, which takes about 10 minutes. It is open to all citizenships and nationalities, as the goal is to gather information on how migrant workers are embedded in their professional network and how people on the different ends of such networks experience inequalities based on citizenship.

The survey is anonymous. During the course of this research, I will be approaching various experts to help me make sense of the information I gathered, and sharing the responses and numbers, but never any personal information. The survey is anonymous, however, I am interested in creating an online group where we can share information, stories and experiences. Thank you for your time and interest in this project! Being an independent researcher is extremely rewarding but also sometimes hard. If you would like to support my effort – and the unpaid hours I spend writing funding applications – you can buy me a coffee :)
